American Lung Association Partners With Convio in Fight Against Asthma in Central Texas

Internet Software Provider for Nonprofits Enables Online Fundraising, Registration, Event Management and Email Communications for 2002 "Blow the Whistle on Asthma" Walkathon

(Austin, TX - February 19, 2002) The American Lung Association of Texas has drafted Convio for its team in the battle against asthma in Central Texas, Convio announced today.  Convio, the leading provider of constituent relationship management software for nonprofits, will help the American Lung Association of Texas optimize use of the Internet to support its 2002 "Blow the Whistle on Asthma" Walkathon on March 23.

The association will use Convio TeamRaiserTM for highly efficient online fundraising, event registration and management, and communications with participants before and after the race.  Post-event communications sustain interaction between the organization and participants, increasing the likelihood of converting participants to sustainable donors and lung health advocates.

"We are excited about cultivating special event donors based on their interests and preferences," said Dietlind Smith Hernandez, Vice President for Development, American Lung Association of Texas.  "No more starting over every year because we don't have time to cultivate the special event participant -- now we have the opportunity to turn first-time Walk participants into lifelong friends of the American Lung Association."

Convio TeamRaiser enables an organization to better leverage its volunteers to help with recruiting supporters and soliciting donations.   The product includes easy-to-use Internet tools for volunteer team leaders to: build their own Web pages explaining why they are involved in an event; send email invitations to family and friends soliciting participation and donations; facilitate online registration of their recruits; and stay in touch with recruits before and after the event.

Benefits to the American Lung Association of Texas include:

  • Increased participation in events or campaigns
  • Online event registration and automatic processing of fees and donations, which significantly reduces the administrative burden compared to offline methods
  • Expanding its database of new prospects for future communications and marketing
  • Pre- and post-event personalized email communications with volunteer fundraisers
  • Real-time reporting which allows staff to monitor campaign progress, analyze campaign effectiveness, and download reports for event planning and event-day check-in and registration

Unlike stand-alone event registration products, TeamRaiser fully integrates with other Convio applications for fundraising, marketing, advocacy and Web content management, allowing nonprofit organizations to have a complete view of online constituent activity. Convio provides the only integrated constituent relationship management system available for nonprofit organizations.

"A growing number of nonprofits that conduct events such as runs and walks are moving a significant portion of the management process online because the Internet affords so many efficiencies," said Vinay Bhagat, founder and CEO, Convio.  "The ability to efficiently identify new prospects for future marketing activities is a particularly significant benefit."

The American Lung Association's 2002 Central Texas "Blow the Whistle on Asthma" Walkathon is March 23 at Waterloo Park in Austin, Texas.  Registration is at 8:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m., with an awards banquet scheduled for May 14 (for more information, please visit http://www.walk4asthma.org/ ).  In Texas, more than 1.1 million people suffer from asthma. Of those, one-third are children under the age of 16.  Over the last 10 years, the prevalence of asthma has increased by more than 75 percent, while the death rate has increased by 55 percent.  According to a recent study, in 2000, 26 million American adults and 8.6 million children under the age of 18 had been diagnosed with having asthma in their lifetime.
