Booz Allen Hamilton Chooses Convio for Online Fundraising at PGA Tour Tournament in Potomac, MD

Professional Golf Fundraising Program, Birdies for Charity, Goes Online for First Time at Booz Allen Classic

AUSTIN, TEXAS (June 10, 2004) -- Booz Allen Hamilton -- one of the world's leading strategy and technology consulting firms -- is "driving the green" by using Convio for online fundraising with a special program at the Booz Allen Classic, the popular PGA Tour tournament to be played in Potomac, MD, June 21-27.

This year's tournament is raising funds for charity through the "Birdies for Charity" program.  For the first time at any professional golf tournament, people will be able to participate over the Internet because Booz Allen has integrated the Convio Fundraising Solution into the event's Web site.  Convio, Inc. is the leading provider of software and services to help nonprofit organizations use the Internet to develop a strong base of constituents to donate, advocate, volunteer and provide other forms of mission-critical support.

Birdies for Charity, an 11-year-old program started by the John Deere Classic (another PGA Tour event), is an important fundraising vehicle used at more than 20 professional golf tournaments, typically generating hundreds of thousands of dollars per event.  Golf fans support a charity by pledging donations for every birdie -- a score of one stroke better than par on any hole -- made by a PGA Tour professional during a golf tournament. Until now, Birdies for Charity has been conducted offline only through traditional fundraising techniques such as paper-based pledge forms.

Last year, Convio helped its 230+ clients collectively raise over $40 million online.  Based on first quarter fundraising for all clients, Convio is on track to far exceed that total in 2004.

The Booz Allen Classic -- formerly the Kemper Open -- kicked off its Birdies for Charity fundraising drive on June 1, several weeks prior to the tournament at the Tournament Players Club at Avenel. Golf fans and other supporters interested in participating online go to the Convio-powered Web site at http://birdies.boozallenclassic.com/ and choose a favorite charity from a drop-down menu of nearly 40 D.C.-area organizations, including regional chapters of the Alzheimer's Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Neediest Kids, and many others. Next, the donor selects a pledge amount -- from one cent to one dollar per birdie. During a professional tournament, players typically make about 1,500 birdies, so a pledge of one penny per birdie generates a $15 donation, a dollar per birdie raises $150 and so on.

The Convio Fundraising Solution provides a complete set of tools for online fundraising, yet does not require users to have technical expertise. The solution enables an organization to easily:

  • Build Web pages to support a campaign;

  • Develop and send emails to constituents with appeals, news and campaign updates;

  • Create customized online giving forms with options for multiple giving levels, donations in honor of or tribute to someone, anonymous gifts, etc.; and

  • Run detailed reports to monitor campaign status, view donor information and analyze giving patterns.

"We're honored that Booz Allen has selected Convio to help drive a major fundraising campaign," said Gene Austin, CEO of Convio. "It also is an honor to be associated with the PGA Tour, which is one of the world's leading sports organizations and annually generates tens of millions of dollars for charities through its tournaments."
